Moses and Polly Dunbar Meekins settled pre-Petersburg ca. 1880. Originally from SC. Parents of Mattie Bourland Cathey and Kittie Eakins. Removed to Montague Co., TX.

Mandy Hancock b. 1855 AL arrived with he parents Tommie and Bethany Hancock ca. 1875. Married Bill Rose ca 1880, widowed, married Bill Burge ca. 1893. Removed to Pontotoc Co late 1890s

Johnny Rose b. 1881 pre-Petersburg, son of Bill and Mandy Hancock Rose. Died tragically in 1893, age 12, breathing toxic fumes from a leaking bottle of carbolic acid fetched on horseback from the Petersburg store.

Dr. Samuel Allen, b. 1839 TN. Dr. Allen resided with his family at Spanish Fort. He was the family doctor for many families of Courtney Flats throughout the 1870s, 80s, and 90s. Died 1899, buried Spanish Fort. .

U..S. Marshall Heck Thomas, worked for Hanging Judge Parker of the Western District of Arkansas. During the 1880s and 90s many residents of the Flat became acquainted with Marshall Thomas. He killed the outlaw George Doolin 1884 at Courtney.

Lee Pemberton, a member of Courtney's Watson gang was present at the Gang's raid on Spanish Fort in 1884 and the 1886 shootout with Spanish Fort lawmen in the town of Courtney. Residing at Courtney since the late 1870s he moved to Spanish Fort in 1895. He was shot there in 1896.

William Ranking Watkins, prominent resident, arrived at Courtney 1877. Chickasaw Citizen by marriage to mixed blood Elizabeth Tyson. Provided refuge for members of the outlaw Watson gang. Lived about a mile west of Courtney town. Moved to Ardmore area about 1888.

John Charles Beavers and wife Mahala Sellers lived with their family at Spanish Fort. Both died 1882 buried at Spanish Fort. Parents of Gideon Beavers with attachments to Courtney Flats..

James Carnahan b. 1844 Lynnville, IN arrived in Courtney area with his family ca. 1876. Died 1923 while visiting his son at Paris, TX. Vet Civil War - Union.

Sam Horrell, "outlaw". Born 1837 in Ark lived Lampases Co., TX for a time. Married Martha Stanley. Involved in the Horrell-Higgins Feud in which his brothers were killed in the Meridian jail. Abt 1880 Horrell and Gus Stanely families lived at Courtney. Reports of abuse in the community and theft of cattle as they departed for Oregon abt 1883. Died 1936 in CA.

Dr. Franklin M. Skaggs b. 1839 in MS. A physician during Civil War. Resided at Courtney for a time in 1880s. Died at The Confederate Home in Ardmore, age 100. Photo by alexpoe06.
